SNAP Chosen for desigNYC 2012 “Recharging Communities” Project

Fort Greene SNAP, is one of sixteen collaborative teams selected by desigNYC for the 2012 “Recharging Communities “projects. The teams are composed of nonprofits serving the public good paired with civic minded design professionals who share their expertise on a pro bono basis. Fort Greene SNAP will work on a collaborative basis with New York City design firm Incorporated Architecture and Design for a resdesign of their Myrtle Avenue storefront.

Fort Greene SNAP offers community programs that teach civic organizing, financial literacy, technology, entrepreneurship and job skills. They are paired with the design firm Incorporated Architecture and Design(www.incorporatedny.com) to have their learning spaces, including the computer lab and multi-use classroom, redesigned to more efficiently accommodate a growing number of participants and staff.

Fort Greene SNAP (www.fortgreenesnap.org) is one of four Brooklyn organizations to be chosen. A total of sixteen nonprofits are being paired with sixteen pro bono design professionals to form collaborative teams and improve the lives of New Yorkers. The three other Brooklyn organizations are Compost for Brooklyn, Gowanus Canal Conservancy and FAB Alliance.

“We are a passionate, open source, multi-disciplinary, Architecture and Design studio dedicated to the integrated of the design disciplines,” says Adam Rolston, of Incorporated. ”As a member of the US Green Building Council and with a 10 year knowledge archive, we approach each project as an individual portrait with distinctive attributes to be filtered through our design lens bringing joy, utility, and craft to each”.

“This is all very exciting,” says Dr. Georgianna Glose, executive director of SNAP. “We’ve already started plans to get everyone involved, our participants, staff, volunteers, board, and neighbors. This will be a group effort to plan a beautiful working space for all our projects.

“Recharging Communities, our theme for 2012, supports projects, that improves communities and strengthen their social fabric,” says Laetitia Wolff, desigNYC executive director. “This year we have selected twice as many projects as last year and are proud to endorse projects working in areas as diverse and challenging as human trafficking,
public transportation, prisoner reentry, food justice, economic development and sustainable urban revitalization.”

For the third consecutive year, desigNYC held an open call to the nonprofit community for great projects ideas and the design community for offers of pro bono design services. A prestigious panel of 16 judges selected this year’s group of nonprofits and matched them with professionals from the architecture, landscape, interiors, communication, interactive and service design disciplines.

The results of the collaborations will be celebrated throughout the year at public programs, training workshops and an annual fall exhibition.

Empowered Parent: Stressed, Are You?

This happening to you? Aches and pains, palpitations and dizziness, digestive problems, grinding your teeth, insomnia, breathing difficulties, feeling tired, frequent infections.

These are some of the physical symptoms of stress. Come to our next workshops at 1pm on October 12th and 19th – our Parenting Advocate Terri L. Ball will be leading a discussion on Stress: Causes and Cures. We had a great discussion the last time we had this workshop, so we’re expanding it to two days so we can share as much info as we can. Come join a great group of parents as we learn about ways to reduce stress, and share your knowledge.

As a parent, what do you do to avoid stress?

Plan for a Better P.S. 67!

The children of Fort Greene are being failed by NYC’s Department of Education and the administration of P.S. 67! These studenss deserve an excellent education and only the community can ensure that happens! Fort Greene SNAP invites you to a meeting to plan for a better P.S. 67!

Test scores of students at P.S. 67 in Fort Greene, released in late July, showed that more than half of the students in third, fourth, and fifth grade were below grade level in reading and math. More than seventy-five percent of fifth graders did not reach grade level in either reading or math.

Fort Greene SNAP hosted a meeting at 7pm on Thursday, August 26th at our storefront space, located at 324 Myrtle Avenue in Brooklyn to address problems at P.S 67.

Discussed were experiences with the DOE and the administration of P.S. 67, discuss why student’s are not getting the education they need and deserve, and plan steps for ensuring that Fort Greene’s children receive a solid beginning in school.

Come visit SNAP’s booth at the Brooklyn Business Expo being held by St. Joseph’s College Community Advisory Council and the Brooklyn Kings County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, May 20, from 2pm to 8pm. The Expo is a great networking opportunity for members of the Brooklyn business community, as well as those who want to start a new business. All the major banks will be there, and there will be over 40 exhibitors – businesses from all over the city including us.
